Summary

Description A tiny purslane plant showing off her heart shaped petals at J.D. MacArthur State Park. This species is listed as "doubtfully native in Florida....probably native to Europe" but there is evidence of it already being in North America by about 1430-1489. Purslane is eaten in salads and it's seeds have been made into seed-cakes. It contains more omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable, along with vitamins, minerals and potent antioxidants. Medicinally, it is used to treat infections, dysentery, skin problems and even snake bite. It also contains cardiac glycosides and oxalates so it has the potential to be toxic if too much is consumed. In ancient times, it was considered an anti-magic herb that would protect from evil spirits if strewn around a bed.
