Type locality: Amitori Bay, Iriomote Island, Yaeyama Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan (depth: 28 m).
Holotype: NSMT-P 71648
Eponymy: akihito: named in honour of Emperor Akihito of Japan, who is a keen ichthyologist with a special interest in gobies.
