Vernacular names[edit]

Swahili: mbambakofi, described as "a good timber tree, like mahogany". In other Swahili dialects it is called: mkora, mkola, mtame, mbarikia, mkongo ^[1] In Nyanja (Chi-Nyanja) a tree called mkongo is "a large tree; the leaves fall at thwe beginning of September; and new ones are all out before October." It is reported that one used to be used as a "preaching tree" on Likoma Island. ^[2]
