The circumscription of this subfamily is very much in flux and there is still only emerging consensus as regards tribes and subtribes (Stevens, 2021). The tribal list over shows the available tribes that have commonly appeared in recent literature. The problems primarily concern; Echinocereeae, Hylocereeae, Pachycereeae and Phyllocacteae. The most recent literature favour Echinocereeae and Hylocereeae with no subtribes and the other two tribes in synonymy based upon priority and generic circumscriptions (Korotkova et al., 2017 & Martínez-Quezada et al., 2020). WP and others do not use subtribes at all. This is based upon NCBI which is not a taxonomy authority. Andyboorman (talk) 08:17, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Changes will reflect current circumscriptions, but this is likely to change over time. Andyboorman (talk) 07:45, 24 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Phyllocacteae is retained here for reference but does not appear in the circumscription over. Andyboorman (talk) 21:02, 24 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
