Linnaeus described Papilio idas twice, and used quite different wordings. The earlier description appears to relate to a black insect with spots and comes from the East or West Indies, while the latter is blue with spots underneath and comes from Sweden. This latter description corresponds closely to that holarctic Lycaenid species currently using the name. The actual nature of the earlier idas I cannot determine. There are a host of synonyms for both of Linnaeus related taxa, P. idas and P. argus. Long lists can be found in Bridges, 1994 (see References on taxon page). As yet I do not have the energy nor the certainty to separate the many superfluous names between the two species.
